1. Savuti Campsite
Savuti Campsite is a beautiful and truly wild camping spot located in the heart of Botswana’s wilderness. What makes this campsite so special is that it has no fences at all — it is completely open, meaning you are fully immersed in nature. Wildlife can move freely through the area, so the chances of encountering animals around the campsite are very real, especially in the early mornings and evenings.
Despite its remote and untamed setting, Savuti Campsite offers excellent facilities. There is a small restaurant where you can enjoy a meal while overlooking the vast open plains. Nearby, a waterhole attracts animals in the evenings, allowing you to observe wildlife up close as they come to drink.
It’s a truly unique place where comfort meets wilderness. From Savuti Campsite, you can also easily organize fantastic safaris and guided tours, making it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area.
2. Ihahah Campsite
Ihaha Campsite is located along the Chobe Riverfront, about 35 kilometers west of Kasane, right inside Chobe National Park. This campsite is one of the most popular choices for self-drive travelers because of its spectacular riverside location and high chances of wildlife sightings directly from camp.
The campsite has no fences, meaning wildlife moves freely through the area. Elephants, hippos, buffalo, and even predators are known to pass through, especially in the evenings and early mornings. This makes Ihaha a true classic bush camping experience, where you constantly feel part of the natural environment.
Facilities are basic but sufficient, with toilets and cold showers, and each campsite is spaced out enough to provide privacy. Camping at Ihaha is all about the location — falling asleep to the sounds of hippos in the river and waking up to animals gathering along the water’s edge.
3. Linyanti Campsite – Remote Wilderness at Its Best
Linyanti Campsite lies in the far northwestern corner of Chobe National Park, along the banks of the Linyanti River. It is one of the most remote and least visited campsites in the park, making it ideal for travelers looking for solitude and an authentic wilderness experience.
There are only a handful of campsites, widely spaced apart, each equipped with a basic braai area, a water tap, and a long-drop toilet. As with most campsites in Chobe, there are no fences, and wildlife can move freely around the camp.
Because of its location near the river, Linyanti is known for frequent sightings of elephants, hippos, large buffalo herds, lions, and an incredible variety of birdlife. During the dry season, animals gather here in large numbers, making it an excellent base for game drives in a quieter part of Chobe.
4. Magotho Campsite – Community Camping Near the Khwai Area
Magotho Campsite is situated just outside Chobe National Park, in the Khwai Community Area, making it a popular stop for self-drive travelers moving between Chobe, Moremi Game Reserve, and the Okavango Delta.
This campsite offers a more open and flexible camping experience, with spacious sites set in natural bushland. Like many camps in the area, Magotho has no fencing, so wildlife such as elephants, hippos, and antelope may pass through the campsite, especially at night.
Facilities are simple but functional, usually including long-drop toilets and bucket showers. What makes Magotho special is its location near the Khwai River, which attracts wildlife throughout the day. It’s a great option for travelers who want a wild atmosphere while still being close to key safari routes.
5. Muchenje Campsite – Scenic Views Near Chobe’s Western Boundary
Muchenje Campsite is located near the western boundary of Chobe National Park, close to the Ngoma area. It offers a slightly more comfortable camping experience while still maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding wilderness.
The campsite is set on elevated ground, providing beautiful views over the Chobe floodplains. Wildlife frequently moves through the area, and although it feels more structured than camps deep inside the park, it still offers that open-area safari atmosphere.
Muchenje is known for its good facilities, including clean ablutions, a small restaurant, and viewing areas overlooking the plains. Nearby waterholes attract animals in the evenings, allowing campers to watch wildlife without leaving camp. From here, it’s easy to organize game drives, river cruises, and guided safaris into Chobe National Park.
